  One that I have heard of but not personally tried is the Ramshorn snail. It is supposed to be good for non-planted tanks, and other than algae they will eat dead plant material and other things.

  I dont consider the Common pleco as an algae eater (maybe as a juvenile) when he is mature he is lazy species. shrimp such as cherry are very useful but only in big numbers. In my opinion Bristlenose catfish ant otto catfish are the best algae eaters.

  About Siamese Algae Eaters… I have a planted 55g w/ 6 SAE. I currently have dwarf hairgrass, java moss, fissidens, and christmas moss in the tank, i’ve kept a variety of plants over the years. I have kept SAE’s for over 7 years, and have never seen them eat any plants, let alone mosses or fine leaved plants. Maybe if you space out on feeding your fish (mine occasionally will come up and eat flake food, or an algae pellet) or don’t have enough algae to keep them fed they’ll resort to eating live plants, however I’ve never seen them munch on a live plant. In my experience they’re hands down the best algae eaters around.

  also, Concerning Pleco’s. I’ve never seen any of my pleco’s eat brown brush algae in any of my tanks. The only fish i’ve ever seen eat brown brush algae is the Siamese Algae Eater. The only fish i’ll ever keep from past experiences are Siamese algae eaters, and otocinclus.

  Again, just sharing my experience. If you have different results, by all means, keep doing what you’re doing!!!

  I have always had a Pleco to control my algae grown, the problems is that they grow to large and they hit other fish with their brute movements.

  Aquarium maintenance is right about that. They grow large and thit other fish, plants and other ornament. I usually control algae with shrimps. Cherry shrimps are my favourite because they breed fast. I love shrimps so I use over 50 shrimps per 25 gallons.

  Correction: The Siamese Algae Eater’s correct name is Crossocheilus Siamesis.

  I have had great success with Snails. Rams Horn mainly. But now my plants are covered in algae since the Fire mouths got to big and ate them all. They got the flick. I swapped em for a pair of Rams.

  Also for Algae I have a Pleco 3\, Chinese Sucker Loach 4\, Red Tailed Shark, and recently a Siamese Algae eater. Oh yeah, I forgot the four types of snails, which I cull/squish and the fish love it. Also 20 odd Ghost Shrimps and a dozen Cherry Shrimps(Fire-mouths ate). Will replace the Cherrys and Ramhorns as soon as I can. The food chain is a bit off balance.

  I have a Standard 4′ tank.
