An introduction to Dottyback keeping
There are many wonderful creatures in the world of saltwater fish keeping, but the number of species suitable for the beginning hobbyist is quite a bit smaller. The dottyback is one fish that may be suitable for some beginners, but these striking fish can be a wonderful choice for nearly any saltwater tank.
In the wild these small and colorful fish live in the many caves and crevices that make up the coral reefs of the world. Ever since the first reef tanks were introduced to the aquarium hobby these bright and colorful fish have been a popular addition to those tanks. They are now widely available, and they have been growing in popularity among many hobbyists from around the world.
One thing that makes dottybacks a good choice for the newcomer is the fact that these fish can be kept in a relatively small aquarium. Even so it is a good idea for any hobbyist to invest in as large a tank as they can afford, since this will provide more room for growth and a greater level of flexibility down the line.
Dottybacks can be quite territorial and they will defend their homes quite vigorously so it is important not to crowd them and to choose tank mates carefully. It is also important to provide plenty of rockwork and build in lots of hiding places for these fish. Once a dottyback has established himself in his home he can be quite unfriendly to newcomers.
Beginning hobbyists will be glad to know that dottybacks are generally quite eas to feed, and a diet of frozen foods like brine shrimp should be eagerly accepted. Dottybacks also have a taste for bristleworms, and in fact they are often used to help control excessive numbers of these creatures.
