Submitted by AquariumsLife.com on March 24, 2009 – 1:28 pmNo Comment

firegoby

Species name: Nemateleotris magnifica
Common names: Fire goby or Fire dartfish
Family: Ptereleotridae (Dartfishes)
Order: Perciformes (perch-likes)
Class: Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes)
Maximum length: 3.5 in.
Minimum tank size: 20 gallon
Hardiness: Easy
Aggressiveness: Peaceful except for other firefish (mated pair will live peacefully)
Reef Compatibility: Excellent
Distribution Indo-Pacific: East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan and Pitcairn islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia and the Austral Islands; throughout Micronesia.
Diet: Carnivore. In the wild, the fire goby faces into the current to feed on zooplankton, (mostly on copepods and other crustacean larvae). You may need to offer live food when you first introduce it to the aquarium but they should be easy to feed usually eat most anything you feed them. Small meaty food like brine shrimp, mysid shrimp, algae or flake would be just perfect. Feed twice a day.

Additional information:
From the Indo-Pacific, the fire goby inhabits outer reef slopes in depths from 6m to 61m.
depth range 20 to 230 feet. It is commonly found in the upper reef slopes where it uses holes in the substrate as burrows. Several individuals may share the same hole (especially juveniles). It can be recognized by its elongate white dorsal fin, yellow snout and white head. The body gradually shades from white to bright orange/red

It likes crevices, caves, and overhangs where they can hide so the ideal aquarium should have plenty of live rock. They like current. These fish prefer to be kept in pairs. It is advised to keep a lid on the aquarium because the fire goby is likely to jump out. Water temperature should be at 72 to 78° F, specific gravity between 1.020 – 1.025 and pH between 8.1 and 8.4
