In the wild, the Redtail Butterflyfish is usually found on reef edge and upper slope of the Indo-West Pacific (Persian Gulf and Maldives to Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia) at depth of 3 to 50 feet. Its highly compressed body goes from brown to black with a vertical white streak behind the eyes and a white stripe in front of the eyes. The tail is distinct with a wide red band followed by black and white bands. Its lighter scales give it a spotted appearance.

The ideal aquarium should be at 72 to 78ºF with a specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.025 and pH at 8.1 to 8.4.
A 60 gallon aquarium is a minimum as it require plenty of swimming room, with live rock and plenty of hiding places. Can be kept in pair if introduced together, otherwise, is best kept singly. To keep to individuals together, add them to the tank simultaneously.
