| REVIEW Two years ago I bought a Weipro Skimmer SA-2017 for an 80 gallon FOWLR tank. After buying 120 lbs of live rock at $10/pound and a brand new tank, my budget was a quite low so I decided to save a little by choosing a Weipro skimmer. They are the cheapest skimmers I know. To be honest with you, this is my second worse purchase after the LED Submersible Moonlight. However, I’ll show you later how I managed to make it the best skimmer I ever had. Let’s say it, the Weipro Protein skimmer is a very low-end skimmer. It takes a while to break in, skim for a few hours and then stop skimming. The knot that control the output is very sensitive. |
Therefore, tuning it is quite difficult. When it works, I have to clean it once or twice a day and the “juice” in the collection cup is only slightly darker than green.
If you own one and are having difficulties to adjust it, here is a few tips for you:
-The inner water level should be adjusted to the base of the riser neck in the collection cup. This can be done by adjusting the outlet pipe’s valve.
-The skimmer needs to be sitting in the water and not have the water higher or lower than the KEEP WATER LEVEL mark (I am talking about the water outside the skimmer).
Six months ago, I finally managed to make some modifications to it.
I don’t have a picture of it so I made this cheap illustration to show you what I did. Basically, the skimmer is still the same; only the input and output have been modified.

The main problem with this skimmer is to adjust it. To address the problem, I simply added better adjustment valve to the input and to the output (the illustration besside only show the modification to the input).
With the perfect pump, the control valve #1 should be wide open and the valve #2 should be closed. My pump is a little strong so I turn valve #1 off a little and open #2. This way, less water get to the skimmer and the extra water simply goes back to the sump.
I also replaced the knot that control the output with another control valve to have better control on it.
My skimmer is now good enough to efficiently remove proteins from the tank water. The collection cup only need to be clean once every 2 weeks and the “juice” inside the collection cup is tick, dark and stinky!
