Seachem Onyx Sand review

Submitted by AquariumsLife.com on January 5, 2010 – 11:00 am2 Comments

Onyx Sand reviewDESCRIPTION
Onyx Sand™ is a specially fracted, stable porous clay gravel for the natural planted aquarium. Its appearance is best suited to planted aquaria, but may be used in any aquarium environment. Being carbonate rich, Onyx Sand™ provides an advantage to any plants able to utilize bicarbonates. Although ideally suited to planted aquaria, it may be used in any aquarium environment. Onyx Sand™ is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed, but it may be mixed with other gravels.

REVIEW
Few months ago I gave a try to the Onyx Sand for my new planted tank. It holds the stem plants better than any other substrate I’ve tried and promote good growth. It is a light grey color (becomes dark gray when submerged). Not as dark as I expected (I like black substrate). The texture is interesting and it doesn’t compact like play sand.

I would say it’s a good substrate but there is a few down side:
-It increase the ph and promotes hard water. You have to fight the ph until the substrate gets depleted.
-There are many sharp edges. I have read repports of fish like cory that ended up with no barbels and died.
