Current USA Fission Nano Skimmer Review

Submitted by AquariumsLife.com on January 2, 2010 – 9:41 amNo Comment

Current USA Fission Nano SkimmerDESCRIPTION
With a height of 6.5″ and 2″ in diameter, the Current USA Fission Nano Skimmer has been design for the nano aquarium. It is powered by a powerhead pump (84 gallons/hour) and should be easy to install and is recommended for aquarium up to 12 gallons. However, I would not recommend it for tanks over 10 gallons. It comes with extra filter floss rings but you could easily make your own when you run out. It also comes with some L-shaped tubes that allow you to place the powerhead pump either to the side or below the skimmer. It is a very very quiet device and this is what I like the most about it!

REVIEW
I have heard great and bad comments about this little device. While some say it’s difficult to adjust correctly and install (I believe that to), other say it’s their best purchase ever. As for my experiences with this skimmer, I’ll say that you get what you paid for. It’s not the best on the market for sure but it’s hard to expect more of a $30 protein skimmer. The directions show that the optimum water level should be at the mid-point of the filter floss ring area. That also means that it will stop once you water level has drop a little. Once adjusted correctly, it needs very little maintenance. One of the first thing you’ll notice is the large amount of micro bubbles produced by the skimmer. The amount of micro bubbles should have diminished slightly after a few weeks but will still be noticeable.

One of the down side of this protein skimmer is that it need to be emptied and checked on a daily basis otherwise the proteins it removed could overflow back into the tank. Talking about cleaning, the tube should be cleaned on a regular basis to keep performances it at it’s best. It also need to be turned off before to feed your fish to make sure it does not get clogged.

Finally, I would say that it’s a good skimmer if it’s all you can get for your nano tank but if you have enough room, I would consider an other model to avoid regular maintenance involved with the Current USA Fission Nano Skimmer.
