American Marine Pinpoint Salinity Monitor Review

Submitted by AquariumsLife.com on January 4, 2010 – 9:41 amNo Comment

Pinpoint Salinity MonitorDESCRIPTION
Pinpoint Salinity Monitor™ will accurately and immediately measure the amount of salt in any marine or freshwater system. The reading is fully temperature compensated, which is difficult or impossible with nearly any commercial hydrometer. The conversion chart will precisely show the corresponding density (specific gravity) or % salt (refractometer) values. This monitor is especially useful to determine the low level of salt required for Koi, whether in an aquarium or outdoor pond.

Given proper care, the PINPOINT Salinity Monitor™ should last a lifetime. Powered by a standard 9-volt battery (not included). Optional AC Adaptor Kit. Additional 53.0 mS calibration fluid and Salinity Conversion Chart included.

REVIEW
-The accruacy is superb! I thought my refractometer was accruate but my Salinity Monitor is much better. It gives a reading in mS which can be converted to % of salt or specific gravity using the conversion chart
-Easy to use. All you have to do is to look.
-The reading is fully temperature compensated, which is difficult or impossible with nearly any commercial hydrometer.
-The pinpoint is calibrateable. Make sure you keep the owner manuel for that.

-Unlike pH and ORP probe, it doesn’t need to be stored wet. All you need is to protect the probe from grease and dirt. It is a physical transducer, not a electro-chemical type like the pH or the ORP.
-under good operating condition, it can last longer than a decade.
-It is especially useful to determine the low level of salt required for Koi.
-The probe is easy to clean using a mild soap or vinegar. I clean my probe once a week.
-It “eat” batteries! It can go through a battery within 48h if I leave it on. Those who wants to leave it on 24h/7 can get an AC power supply but I have been told people using this gets constant variation in reading.

Once you have it you’ll never want to be without one.
