Tips To Remove Duckweed In Aquarium

Under good growing conditions, duckweed is an extremely fast growing plant that can double the area it covers in a day or two. I believe it is a really nice plant but it blocks the light, making other species hard to grow and I hate to have duckweek drip off the elbows everytime I stick my arms in the tank.
Here are a few tip you might want to try to remove duckweed before things gets out of control:
The first thing to do is to turn the filter off so the duckweed won’t get knocked down into your tank where it will get trapped and be impossible to remove (turn it back on after the cleaning). Then, start picking out every little individual piece of duckweed you see. You will probably not get it all the first time but if you keep picking it up every day before it multiplies, you’ll eventually win the battle. If you skip a few days, it will replenish itself so, you have to keep at it.
Another way to control duckweed is to add fish what will eat it. Australian Rainbows, goldfish mollies and other plant eating fish will clean it all in no time.
Finally, remember to pick it out right away everytime you reintroduce it.

One of our club members in GWAPA came up with an ingenious way to deal with duckweed. Invert a powerhead so that the suction is pointed toward the water surface. Take a small soda bottle, cut it in half, and insert the mouth of the bottle so that it fit into the intake of the powerhead. Put some filter floss in the bottom of the bottle, and position the whole thing just below the water surface. Turn on the powerhead. The output of the powerhead will cause the water to circulate, while the intake will suck the duckweed down into the funnel of the cup and trap it in the filter floss. Simply let it run for a little while, and remove the cup. It should be full of duckweed.
What a great idea!!! I will keep this in mind for the next time I have to deal with duckweed!
Thanks lot
