Here is an excellent and attractive addition to any freshwater tank. The Marimo ball, also known as Moss ball or Japanese moss ball is actually a filamentous green algae (Chlorophyta) found in a number of lakes in the northern hemisphere: Japan, United Kingdom, Russia, Iceland and Northern Europe.

I just realized I never wrote about that very important aspects of successful fish keeping: water changes. This might be obvious for many of us but it is certainly not for everyone. Yesterday, I received two calls from people looking for an answer to their problems: The first tank wasn’t cycled after 6 months (ho yeah!) and the 2nd had a serious (I mean… SERIOUS!!!) nitrate problem. Two problems that could have been avoided with regular water changes.
I’ve always been curious about new techniques and idea. I can’t resist, I have to try them all. Three years ago, I heard about a simple filtration system that removes nitrates and phosphates from any aquarium (fresh and saltwater) at low cost. Once again, I couldn’t resist and decided to give it a try.
